Aboard the vessel were 2,938 plastic and vinyl sex toys, according to USBP officials.
USBP spokesman Kyler Howlett said that the toys were apparently on a list of banned products by the Food and Drug Administration.
Chinese toys are dangerous because they contain lead, cadmium, and other toxins that are harmful especially for those who put things in their mouths or other orifices. "This seizure doesn't surprise me one bit," said Bruce Stroud, an economics professor at the
. "This is a huge and growing market in the University of California U.S. so cheaply made products have
a great profit margin. Sadly average American is probably unaware of the range
of possibly lead-tainted products in homes."
"I just advise people to know what you’re buying," continued Stroud, "because the next time you light the candles, start the video recorder, and start out on a night of fun, you could be endangering your health and your partners with contaminated toys from China."
Carlsbad Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Calderwood said efforts would continue at a scaled-back level to find the man who jumped from the boat, even though it is now considered a body recovery. "You never know what you might find out there," said Calderwood. "There might be a man still alive thanks to the byproducts that are in Chinese sex toys. I've seen stranger things happen."
